Anyone know how to get over a racing slump? Asking for a friend?
I started the season smashing my goals and since having a week off in April i've taken a bit of a blunder. Here’s what I’m focusing on now to turn it around:
1. Refocusing my goals
Reminding myself what I want to achieve, resetting realistic and achievable targets (but also aspirational). Along with timescales of when I want to achieve this by.
2. Looking back at my progress
Progress is a bumpy road, make sure to remind yourself of where you have come from and what improvements you have made and be proud of those, as well as focusing ahead on improvements you want to make.
3. Resetting mindset
Lack of belief is probably the biggest thing that can hold you back, having a negative mindset definitely digs me further into a hole, which is then more difficult to climb out of. Resetting this and becoming more positive is definitely helping me to overcome this. Its also important not to beat yourself up over a few races you may not have been happy with, often there is external factors we cannot control! Worrying about these or fretting on these will not be helpful.
4. Don’t compare yourself to others
So much easier said than done! And so hard when you look on social media! I find it hard if I see someone absolutely smashing their goals when I’m not! But thinking like this just pushes us further into that hole, pushing us further away from our own goals. I’m trying just to be pleased for them rather than jealous haha. Whilst also looking to them for inspiration and potentially learning on how I can improve.
5. Be happy with where we are at?
We constantly focus on self-improvement to the point where it is just exhausting. Maybe it’s time to focus on what we are already happy with! It’s great to want to do better and be the best version of ourselves, but we also need to remember everything we are smashing and succeeding at!
Don’t get me wrong I’m still a work in progress when it comes to considering all these things, but I’m trying my best to improve my mindset and get out of my slump.
