My story on how I got into racing
I tried my first race when at university, I wasn’t particularly fit or fast but I enjoyed riding with the club and someone suggested I give it a go! I got dropped loads, but overall, I really enjoyed it. I didn’t get very far and decided not to pursue racing. In 2020 I decided I would give racing a proper go, I was a bit fitter and wanted to commit to cycling a bit more. I did two races and then the rest were cancelled due to covid. Last year was my first proper season and my approach was just to try absolutely everything I could do! And I enjoyed every minute (almost)!
My tips and advice
1. Give it a go
Never be afraid to give something a go, what’s the worst that can happen?
2. Don’t be intimidated by others
Don’t worry what everyone else is doing pre race, don’t let them put you off, they are probably just as nervous as you are!
3. Don’t be afraid to get dropped
Many people get dropped in their first race hell many people get dropped I their 100th race, its nothing to be ashamed of, just carry on and use it as a training session and if you get lapped - 2 benefits, you’ll have one less lap to do! And you can get back in the group and practice sticking in.
4. Look for easier races to start with
Unfortunately, a lot of women’s races have many categories lumped in together, my first few races were e/1/2/3/4 category races, luckily no elites in the race but I did go up against a 1st cat as a 4th cat, not exactly the easiest race introduction. However, as cycling grows more popular, and women’s racing gets bigger more races have been put on with varying categories. There are often 3/4 women’s races now if you look around and the occasional 4th cat only race. These will be a much nicer introduction to racing!
5. See if you can attend any training sessions
Often local clubs will run training sessions which you can get involved with. Intro to racing events are a great way to get involved and try it in a very friendly, low pressure environment. One of my favourite regular races last year are running some get into racing sessions end of April at Bovingdon.
6. What to wear racing
Any plain cycling kit is fine (by plain i just mean no replica team kits). Aim for tight fitting cycling clothes to get those aero gains! I even wore a tri-suit for a few races (not sure if i should admit to that though haha).
7. Enjoy it
Just have fun that’s what it is all about!
