How to… Change a tubeless tyre

Or how not to….

Okay so ive had many interesting things happen changing a tubeless tyre so have picked up a few how tos and how not tos along the way.

Firstly things ive done that you probably don’t want to repeat……

1. Blew the tyre up too much before it was properly seated…. The tyre blew of the rims IN MY HAND, it was actually so painful I had a bruise all across the palm of my hand! Ouch! It also absolutely covered me in sealant (and trust me it is not easy to get off! I had to throw my clothes away!)

2. Couldn’t get the tyre off the rim so had a tantrum! Yes I know very immature but I was very stressed haha (everything else was going wrong as well tbf)

3. Being able to get the tyre back on the bloody rim!!! So I may have had to get some help with this, even with tyre leavers this can be a challenge!

4. Put the tyre on the wrong way round (yes many tyres have a rotation) I then asked a friend (and googled) if it mattered, it looked like not particularly but apparently it might cost me some watts!!!! Cant be having that! As well as potentially fusing to the rim? Didn’t really understand this but didn’t sound good… and it wont wick the water away as well in the wet. I decided I better change it but you can imagine how thrilled I was by this prospect after points one, two and three!

Some tips….

1. Firstly wear old clothes haha

2. Be patient with the bloody tyre! They can be very tight that’s normal!

3. Ask someone to help you getting it on/off don’t react like me haha!

4. Little trick I read- when you have the tyre on- pump it up to 40psi bounce it on the ground a few times to help it seal- this sealed my tyre mostly but there was still one side that wouldn’t seal properly, I let it down and did the process again, still same area wouldn’t seal so I then pumped it up to around 80! The tyre did go bang a few times but it sealed perfectly, (I did hear the neighbours say what was that! It did sound like a gun had gone off!) I was then very careful when picking it up I did not want it to blow off!

5. Make sure you do the tyre when you have plenty of time! Some tyres seal easier than others and you don’t want to be faffing when your running short of time.

6. Shake the sealant! (I have not made this mistake but I know someone that has) they did not shake their sealant before putting it in the tyre so when they got a puncture there were no bits to actually seal it just liquid!!! Very funny to laugh at him and I was glad it wasn’t me haha!

7. Putting sealant in the tyre- some sealants say on the instructions to put it through the valve but every time ive changed a tyre ive just stuck it in before completely putting the tyre back on.

If you have any more tips for me please let me know, love learning new and better ways of doing things!
