As a cyclist I feel we often get treated with little respect on the road by drivers. Maybe its just where I live but ive noticed a lot of assholes out on the road recently.
These are all things that happened to me in ONE ride (just 1.5hrs).
The shitty over-takers
I find often cars feel the need to “squeeze” past you either when the road is too narrow or if there is a car coming in the other direction. This is obviously much worse in rush hour when people are trying to ‘rush’ home! I get it, I hate being delayed and want to get home from work as quickly as possible. But the 30 seconds a cyclist holds a car up for, really isn’t worth the ‘squeeze’.
The man with van

On this particular ride I had a van wind down the passenger window and shout something out at me. I signalled back, I cant hear you (I genuinely had my earphones in and didn’t hear them). They then slowed down and pulled up in front of me, I stopped well back from the van and didn’t go near them, I then just hear them shout out the van something about me having a nice arse. Like am I supposed to be happy that they think that? Take it as a compliment? Firstly, I already know this, so don’t need your validation and secondly, I don’t appreciate two men in a van pulling over on a countryside road where there is no one else around, very intimidating and not necessary. And thirdly, I really don’t care about your opinion of my arse!
The I feel I have a right to throw something at you while your cycling asshole
On the same ride (yes I know very eventful ride!) I was cycling along and felt something hit my helmet, literally thought nothing of it, felt like a bug hitting me hard in the helmet or a bit of a twig or something. When I got home and took my helmet off, I touched my head and felt something in my hair, freaked out thinking it was a snail or something. Turns out I had a piece of gum in my hair. Absolutely disgusting! Why someone thinks that is an acceptable thing to do I have no idea! It left me actually feeling a bit violated.
Honestly was a bit of a ride from hell in terms of assholes on the road! Apart from that my ride was lovely, great weather and a great session.
